Nielsen Book Gold and Platinum Awards

The Nielsen Book Gold and Platinum Awards were established in 2000 and are presented to authors and publishers that have achieved exceptional sales.  To qualify for a Gold Award you have to have achieved sales of 500,000 copies and for Platinum 1m copies.  Publishers have to claim the awards and can then either order awards for presentation to their authors or for themselves.

John Boyne receives Nielsen Book Gold Award
Publisher David Fickling (part of Random House Children’s Books) originally published the title and last week presented the author, John Boyne with his Nielsen Book Gold Award at the offices of United Agents.  Simon Trewin (John Boyne’s agent) said: “we were thrilled to be in our boardroom yesterday (2nd December) when John’s publicist, (Clare Hall-Craggs) presented John with a Nielsen Gold Award for sales of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Having represented John for his whole career this was a wonderful moment to be part of. I have a feeling we will be claiming a Platinum award from Nielsen Book before too long.”

John Boyne added: “Talking about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas to audiences of all ages has been the most rewarding experience of my life. Every writer wants as many readers as possible and to receive the Gold Book Award from Nielsen to mark the UK sales of the novel is a wonderful way of acknowledging that those readers are out there. A very welcome Christmas present!”
